PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) is an all volunteer, nonprofit organization founded in 1981, largely through the efforts of one Akron mother and a gay professor at Kent State University.

PFLAG’s goals are to:

  • Offer support, information and personal experiences to parents, siblings, spouses and other family members and friends of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered individuals.
  • To work toward an environment of understanding and acceptance within families and in the community.


  • PFLAG Akron-oldest of 20 Ohio chapters-is a member of the National Federation of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays founded in 1981 in Los Angeles. There are over 500 affiliates worldwide, comprising nearly 100,000 households. The National PFLAG office is located in Washington DC.
